I am a painter with a deep interest in historic places, architectural memory and the design of new environments.

My paintings, drawings and collages emerge from connected fascinations: how a sense of place is formed, how it is remembered, and how that sense of place can be reconstructed through visual language.

My 25-year background in architecture, together with a lifelong engagement with architectural history, underpins each piece. The places I choose to work with may be sacred or secular, celebrated monuments or overlooked and abandoned sites. Years spent working with complex buildings and urban settings have shaped the way I read the layers, histories, spaces and relationships that sit beneath the surface. This informs both how I select and frame my subjects, and how I reconstruct them on canvas.

My work often moves between figuration and abstraction, graphic precision and painterly gesture, architectural fidelity and dramatic simplification. I work predominantly in mixed media, combining paint, ink, printmaking processes and collage. Surfaces are built gradually: first through strong lines and tonal structures, then through translucent washes, veils of colour and increasingly gestural marks. By wiping back through layers, earlier decisions and iterations remain visible. In this process, what is removed is as significant as what is added.

Each body of work begins with walking: observing, recording and discovering the places around me. This is followed by reading and research, through which I explore a site’s history, context and possible future. In the studio, drawings, photographs, found papers and fragments become starting points for a process of dismantling, rethinking and reassembling place into line, shape, texture and layered surface. Paintings often develop through several iterations as I work to balance contrasting elements and allow the image to find its own internal logic.

​What I am aiming for is not a strict depiction, but something more unreliable, provisional, yet still true in its own terms. It is this search for material and visual languages that can be a spatial experience, a feeling, a memory, and a foundation, that lies at the centre of everything I do.
